Seasons
Gardens, much like our lives, travel through a variety of seasons. As I write this, we are embarking on a new one in our family garden, as our oldest child graduates high school and heads away to pursue his own dream. I am as proud of him as a mother can be, and yet it hurts to know I won’t see him every day as I mostly have for the past eighteen years, or hear that familiar, “Love you, Mom” as he walks out the door each morning.
I’ll miss him taking my arm in the winter as we walk across icy pathways, making sure I don’t slip. Whether I need the help or not, I am always touched by the gesture. Perhaps especially I’ll miss talking with him daily, as both he and our younger son have grown into people whose opinions I look forward to hearing.
Make your garden a multi-season experience by including plants that provide variation as the temperatures change. Perennials that feature berries in the winter and flowers in the summer add year-round interest to your landscape.
